I hate wasting food. I was brought up in a house where wasting food was just about the worst thing you could do. I bet that’s probably why at 37 years old I’m still a member of the clean plate club.
That said, I try to recycle my food whenever I can. Bread is a great example of how to do that.
Whenever we have parties there is always leftover Italian bread. I’ll never let it go to waste. There are tons of different things you can use it for but one of my favorites is by making homemade garlic butter croutons.
What You’ll Need:
- Day or two old bread (stale but not hard as a rock)
- Butter
- Olive oil
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic powder
- Salt & pepper
How To Do It:
First cut up your leftover bread into uniformed pieces. The size is up to you but I like mine on the larger side.

Next is today the butter and whisk all the other ingredients together. Please don’t substitute the garlic powder for fresh garlic. It will most likely burn during the baking process and ruin the whole taste.

Next pour that seasoned butter mixture all over the breadcrumbs. Stir to coat evenly.

Now place the cubed bread evenly over a baking sheet. I would have lined this with parchment paper had I had some.

Next is to bake the soon to be croutons in a 350° oven for about 15/20 minutes.

Keep an eye on the oven to make sure they don’t burn.

Not the cutest picture but that’s what they really look like. Well for me at least.

Now place them on a paper towel or remove any extra oil. There probably wont be much but best to be sure.

Then just place them on your salad and enjoy!
Crouton Uses:
These homemade garlic butter croutons are so flavorful that they go great with just about anything. The two main uses would be for soups and salads.
All these croutons that didn’t make it to my salad were meant to be saved. We wound up picking on them so much that we ate the entire thing.
I guess that’s a good sign that they’re awesome though.

I hope you enjoy this homemade croutons recipe! By the way, you might also like making your own homemade bagel chips, too!
