Chopped cheese sandwiches are a delicious twist on the traditional cheeseburger.
Chopped Cheese Sandwich
From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito
I saw this chopped cheese sandwich on my friend Southern Vibin’s Tik Tok page and had to make it immediately.
I literally drooled at the screen. The cheesy beef, toasted buns and yum yum sauce gave me such bad food envy.

Lucky for me these are super easy to make. If you can make a cheeseburger you can make a chopped cheese sandwich.
This is my version of his recipe. If you want to check his out visit him here.
If you’re looking for a super easy dinner idea these chopped cheese sandwiches are it. My Crispy Oven Roasted Potatoes happen to go perfectly as a side to these, too.
No fuss, no hard work and a ton of delicious reward.
Don’t forget to add some Yum Yum Sauce to the top of these, too. It totally makes the sandwich.

What is a chopped cheese sandwich?
This style of sandwich was originally made first in NYC. So what is it?
A chopped cheese sandwich is pretty much a cheese burger made a little differently.
For instance, the burger patties are broken down into little pieces while cooking.
Most of them add onion also.

Kind of like a “loose meat” sandwich.
There’s cheese added to the beef and mixed in as a binder. So it’s not too sloppy to eat.
More cheese (traditionally American) is added to the top and served.
Instead of a burger bun, chopped cheese sandwiches are usually served on a roll.
What bread should I use for a chopped cheese sandwich?
Ditch the burger buns for this one.
Try to find a really nice round roll. I used a sesame roll here but choose your favorite.
As long as it’s bigger and thicker then a burger bun, you’ll be good.

Long rolls are great for chopped cheese sandwiches, too.
It’s all completely your preference.
Ideally grab something from your local deli or from the deli department of your grocery store.
What toppings go well with a chopped cheese sandwich?
Anything you’d put on a cheeseburger would be incredible on a chopped cheese sandwich.
Here are some great topping ideas:

- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Pickles
- Caramelized onions
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Bacon
- Hot pepper relish
- Ketchup
- Mayo
- Yum Yum Sauce (my favorite one)
Get creative though and add whatever toppings you love.
Chopped cheese sandwich ingredients:
- “Good” deli rolls
- Ground beef (or beef burgers)
- American cheese
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Onion powder
- Chopped onion
- Lettuce
- Yum Yum Sauce
Instructions:
1. First, brown the ground beef. If you’re using burgers break them down using a wooden spoon or spatula into little pieces as the meat cooks. Drain the fat from the pan if you need to.

2. Next, add the minced onion.

3. Now add the seasonings and Worcestershire sauce.

4. Add the shredded cheese and stir everything together.

5. Then slice the rolls in half and add bottom to a baking sheet. Add one slice of American cheese and a big scoop of the beef mixture to the top.

6. Next add another slice of American cheese and another big scoop of the beef.

7. Lastly add the top of the roll and bake it until the cheese is melted and the bread is nice and toasty.

8. Finish it with some of that delicious Yum Yum sauce, lettuce, and whatever other toppings you’d like.
