In a large skillet, heat the oil and butter together over medium high heat and saute the onion.
Once the onion is soft, add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
Add the orzo and sauté for another minute, stirring frequently.
Slowly pour in the vegetable broth, heavy cream and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
Turn the heat up to medium high and once it begins to gently boil, turn the heat down to low and let the orzo cook for 5 minutes.
Add the broccoli florets. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, move the florets around so that they are partially submerged in the liquid. Cook the broccoli and orzo for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until the broccoli and orzo are both soft.
Turn the heat off on the burner and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until it is melted.
Finally, let it cool slightly, serve warm and enjoy!
