Traditional sausage stuffing is a delicious holiday side dish made with cooked Italian sausage, sautéed vegetables and cubed stuffing that the whole family will love.

Traditional Sausage Stuffing

From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito

Traditional sausage stuffing might just be the best holiday side dish, ever!

It wouldn’t be the holidays without the stuffing (or dressing depending on what you call it) and this is an absolute fantastic recipe for it.

Nothing goes better with a Thanksgiving ham or Turkey, in my opinion, than this. It’s my favorite side dish to indulge in for sure.

Sometimes, the sides really are the star of the show and this one is a show stopper.

I’ve hosted quite a few Thanksgivings over the years and the stuffing is a really big deal among my friends and family.

Everyone looks forward to it every year. Myself included and maybe most of all.

The flavors of the sausage with the sautéed vegetables and cubed stuffing go together so very well.

I swear, I could fill up on this and this alone and wouldn’t mind one bit.

I hope you give this recipe a try. If you do, I know you’ll love it just as much as my family and I do.

Fast. Simple. Delicious.

Traditional Sausage Stuffing Variations

I like this stuffing recipe made just the way it is but here are some ways to change it up if you’d like to.

  • Stuffing- I like to use two different bags of stuffing to add some different textures and flavors. Use any flavor combination that you’d like or two of the same.
  • Bread- Use torn up day old bread or toast your own bread if you prefer that over the cubed bagged stuffing.
  • Broth- Vegetable or Chicken broth would both be great choices here.
  • Ad Ins- Add some diced and sautéed apples, or walnuts to the stuffing for some different flavor combinations and textures.

Traditional Sausage Stuffing Ingredients

  • Ground Sausage
  • Pepperidge Farm Herb Seasoned Cubed Stuffing
  • Pepperidge Farm Herb Seasoned Classic Stuffing
  • Celery, chopped
  • Onion, chopped
  • Garlic, minced
  • Butter
  • Vegetable Broth
  • Fresh Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
  • Salt, Pepper, Poultry Seasoning and Garlic Powder

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°

First, in a large skillet, brown the sausage and break it down into small pieces as it cooks.

Then, remove it from the pan and place it into a small bowl.

Now, in the same pan that you cooked the sausage in, melt the butter and add the celery, onion and garlic.

Next, lightly season the vegetables with salt and pepper and sauté them for about 5-7 minutes or until they are soft.

Then, stir the sausage back in and add the bundle of sage, rosemary and thyme.

Now, cover the skillet and let it cook on low for about 5 minutes.

Next, in a medium sized sauce pan, bring the butter and vegetable broth to a boil and then simmer until the butter is completely melted and incorporated into the broth.

Then, in a large bowl, add both bags of the stuffing, the sausage and vegetable mixture (remove the bundle of fresh herbs) and broth.

Now, season the stuffing with a little more salt and pepper, garlic powder and poultry seasoning.

Next, stir everything together until it’s evenly combined and add it to a greased baking dish.

Then, place it in to the oven ,covered, for about 10 minutes.

Now, turn the oven temperature up to 400°, remove the foil and place it back into the oven, uncovered, for an additional 10 minutes.

Finally, let it cool slightly and enjoy!

Can I make this a day ahead and cook next day? Would I need to add any liquid the next day?

Hi! Had to have been a mistake. It’s supposed to only bake for 40 min. It was supposed to say 20 and 20 not 10 and 10. So sorry

I want to make this recipe but other sausage stuffing recipes have it baking for 60-65 min. Why is this baking time so short?
