These In-N-Out animal style fries are a copycat version of the famous west cost restaurant chain’s that are super delicious and easy to make, too.

In-N-Out Animal Style Fries

From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of trying In-N-Out animal style fries then consider yourself lucky.

The first time that I tried them I was so disappointed that we don’t have access to the In-N-Out chain restaurants here in New Jersey.

I absolutely fell in love with the menu items. Especially those delicious animal style fries.

I

Every time I make a trip out to California, I go out of my way to make sure that a visit to the restaurant is in my travel plans.

We don’t really have anything comparable to them on the east coast.

Don’t get me wrong, Jersey has its fair share of incredible burger chains here but nothing on the menu is quite like those fries.

Instead of waiting for a trip to the west coast, I decided to make these fries and home. What a fantastic decision that turned out to be!

Now, they aren’t exactly the same as the restaurants, of course. But this copycat version is as close as it gets and I can enjoy them from home whenever I want.

I hope you give this recipe a try! I’m sure you’ll absolutely love them just as much as I do.

In-N-Out Animal Style Fries Variations

I love this recipe as it is, but here are some ways to switch it up if you’d like to.

  • Fries- Use any kind or brand of frozen fries that you’d like to. This recipe even works with sweet potato fries.
  • Cooking- I find that it’s just easier to just cook the fries on a sheet pan in the oven considering they have to go back in there to melt the cheese but cook them however you’d like. I’d you choose to fry or air fry them, just add them to a baking sheet and melt the cheese under the broiler for just a couple of minutes.
  • Cheese- feel free to use whatever kind of cheese that you’d like. They are all fantastic for this recipe.
  • Heat- if you’d like to add some spice to these fries, add a couple dashes of hot sauce to the animal style sauce. Try choosing a spicy cheese to top the fries, too, like pepper jack.

In-N-Out Animal Style Fries Ingredients

  • Frozen Fries
  • Onion, diced
  • Butter
  • Mayonnaise
  • Ketchup
  • Sweet relish
  • Yellow mustard
  • Salt and pepper
  • White vinegar
  • American cheese

Instructions

First, place the fries onto a baking sheet and cook them according to the directions on the package.

Now, in a medium sized bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sweet relish, white vinegar, salt and pepper.

Then, place it into the refrigerator for a few minutes to let the flavors blend together.

Next, melt the butter in a medium sized skillet and add the diced onions.

Now, lightly season the onions with salt and pepper and cook them over medium high heat for about 10 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Once the fries are cooked, turn off the oven and add the slices of American cheese, side by side, so the fries are covered.

Then, place the fries back in the turned off oven for about 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Now, sprinkle the cooked onions on top of the cheese fries.

Finally, remove the animal style sauce from the fridge and top the fries with it and enjoy!
