These delicious French onion meatballs are made with French onion seasoned ground beef simmered in a flavorful sauce and covered in gooey cheese.

French Onion Meatballs

From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito

These French onion meatballs became an instant family favorite in my house the very first time that I made them.

My family went absolutely crazy for them, and I gotta say that I can’t blame them one bit.

These are so delicious and loaded with incredible French onion flavor. The melted cheese topping just completely takes them to the next level.

Meatballs in general are always a big hit around here. This was the perfect recipe to put a fresh new spin on an old favorite.

You can serve this over pasta or rice, but I actually like to eat it with a nice big piece of Italian bread to dunk into the sauce.

I hope you give this recipe a try. If you do, I know that you'll love it just as much as my family and I do.

French Onion Meatballs Variations

I like this recipe as it is, but here are some ways to switch it up if you'd like to.

  • Beef - Ground beef tastes best here in my opinion, but ground chicken or turkey would work too.
  • Serving - Serve these meatballs alone, over pasta, egg noodles, or white rice.
  • Cheese - I used Swiss cheese here because it’s more accessible and a little more affordable, but Gruyère would be a wonderful swap. Mozzarella would even work here, too, if you’d prefer to use that.

Other Easy Meatball Recipes

If you like easy to make meatball recipes like this one, here are some others that I know you’ll love, too.

French Onion Meatballs Ingredients

  • Ground Beef
  • Lipton Dry French Onion Packet
  • Italian Seasoned Breadcrumbs
  • Egg
  • Milk
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Onions, sliced
  • Butter
  • Beef broth
  • Flour
  • Salt, pepper and garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°

First, combine the ground beef, onion soup packet, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a large bowl.

Now, form them into small to medium, equal-sized meatballs and place them onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Next, bake them in the oven for 30 minutes.

In the meantime, heat the oil in a large pan and add the sliced onions. Cook them until they begin to soften.

Now, season them with salt and pepper and stir in the butter.

Next, once the butter is melted stir in the flour and let that cook for about 3 minutes.

Then, add the beef broth, season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme, and bring everything to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

Once the meatballs are done, carefully add them to the onions and beef broth.

Now, cover them in shredded Swiss cheese and sprinkle the top with fresh parsley.

Next, put a lid on and let the cheese melt. This shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Finally, serve warm over rice, pasta or egg noodles. Enjoy!
