Ham and cheese pinwheels are a delicious appetizer or snack made by rolling sliced ham and cheese in pizza dough and baking it in a buttery, mustard based topping.

From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito

These ham and Swiss pinwheels are the easiest and most delicious little appetizer or snack. Sometimes the more simple the ingredients, the more delicious the results. This recipe is a perfect example of that.Ham and Swiss are such a wonderful flavor combination. How could anyone resist that delicious duo?

Bake them in between some pizza dough that’s been bushed with a buttery, mustard based topping and you’ve got a truly crowd pleasing appetizer. Not only are they incredibly delicious, but they’re practically effortless to put together, too. That’s a win win if you ask me.

Ingredients

Heres what you'll need to make these delicious pinwheels. You can find the full ingredients list along with measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Pizza Dough- The backbone of the pinwheels. Holds everything together and bakes up beautifully into a soft golden crust. I used Pillsbury Classic Crust
  • Flour (for dusting)- Helps prevent the dough from sticking to the surface.
  • Swiss Cheese- Complements the hams saltiness without over powering it.
  • Ham- Adds a meaty richness and substance and helps the pinwheels stay tender and moist.
  • Melted Butter- Adds richness and helps the topping adhere to the pinwheels
  • Dijon Mustard- Adds a subtle tang that cuts through the richness. I use Grey Poupon
  • Worcestershire Sauce- Brings a savory depth to the buttery topping.
  • Poppy Seeds- Brings a little crunch and makes them look super visually appealing.

How To Make It

Heres how to make these delicious pinwheels. You can find the full ingredients list along with instructions on the recipe card below.

Preheat the oven to 350°

First, roll the pizza dough out into a rectangle shape on a lightly floured surface. Next, lay the slices of ham down on top of the dough in a thin layer to cover the surface. Then, lay the Swiss cheese down on top of the ham. Jelly roll the dough and place it seem side down onto a cutting board. Now, using a serrated knife, slice the dough into 1.5-2” pinwheels. Then, place the pinwheels down onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

NOTE: Be sure to get thinly sliced ham and Swiss cheese to make the pinwheels easy to roll.

PRO TIP: Cutting them with a serrated knife will allow for clean cuts that down smash the pinwheels down.

Next, place them into the center rack of the oven for 15 minutes. Then, stir together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and poppy seeds. Now, brush the mixture on top of the pinwheels and place them back into the oven for another 5-10 minutes or until the dough is cooked all the way through. Finally, let them cool slightly, serve warm and enjoy!

PRO TIP: Placing them into the center rack of the oven will allow the heat to circulate evenly and cook the top and bottom of the pinwheels perfectly.

Can I Use A Different Kind Of Cheese?

Yes, you can absolutely use a different kind of cheese for this. American, Provolone, Mozzarella or any kind of cheese that you prefer would be wonderful.

Can These Be Made In The Air Fryer?

These pinwheels can absolutely be made in the air fryer. Lay the sliced pinwheels into the air fryer basket thats been preheated to 350 degrees and cook them for 8-12 minutes.

Do I Have To Use Canned Pizza Dough?

No, you don't have to use canned dough. Fresh pizza dough from a pizza place or homemade would be great. Crescent roll dough would work for this, too.

Can I Use Something Besides Ham?

Yes, you can substitute the ham for sliced deli turkey or pepperoni.

Storage

Let the pinwheels cool completely and place them into an air tight container. They will last in the refrigerator for up to three days.
