Chicken Divan is a creamy casserole made with shredded rotisserie chicken and broccoli baked under a flavorful cheese sauce and breadcrumb topping.
From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito

This classic Chicken Divan is a cozy, comforting casserole with a nostalgic feel. This is a meal most of us remember eating as a kid. Tender shredded rotisserie chicken and bright green broccoli florets get smothered in a rich, creamy cheese sauce. Top that with a crunchy breadcrumb layer and you've got a winning dinner that everyone will be coming back for. It's easy enough for a weeknight meal yet special enough to pull out when friends or family are at your table.
This recipe is the perfect blend of creamy, cheesy, and satisfying. Its also a great way to sneak in some extra veggies or use up some leftover chicken. My family loves this one! It truly is classic comfort food at it's best. If you've never tried it, or its been a while since you have, this is you sign to make this.
Ingredients
Heres everything you'll need to make this delicious chicken dinner. You can find the full ingredients list along with measurements in the recipe card below.
- Fresh Broccoli Florets- Adds color and a slightly crisp texture that balances the rich sauce.
- Shredded Rotisserie Chicken- A super convenient protein that keeps the dish hearty and filling.
- Campbells Cream Of Chicken Soup- Gives the casserole its signature creamy texture.
- Campbells Cream Of Mushroom Soup- Adds creaminess and an earthy flavor.
- Sour Cream- Adds richness to the sauce with a slight tang.
- Monterey Jack Cheese- Adds a smooth, gooey richness to the dish.
- Cheddar Cheese- Bring a sharp taste with smooth texture.
- Seasoned Breadcrumbs- Adds a crunchy texture and contrasts the creaminess of the casserole. 4C Seasoned Breadcrumbs are the best to use, in my opinion.
- Olive Oil- Helps the breadcrumbs toast up and achieve the golden brown coloring. I used the brand Graza.
- Salt- Enhances the flavor of all the other ingredients.
- Pepper- Cuts the richness of the other ingredients.
- Garlic Powder- Adds a nice, garlicy flavor throughout the entire dish. I used the brand McCormick
- Parsley- An optional garnish that brings a little pop of color to the finished dish.
Instructions
Heres how to make this delicious chicken dinner. You can find the full ingredients list along with instructions in the recipe card below.
Preheat the oven to 375°
First, boil the broccoli in salted water for about 2 to 3 minutes. Drain it from the water and add it to a greased 9 x 13” baking dish. Lightly seasoning it with salt and pepper. Layer the shredded rotisserie chicken on top. Lightly season it with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
NOTE: Don't over cook the broccoli or it will turn to mush. You want to make sure it holds its shape.

Then, in a medium sized bowl, add the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, Monterey Jack cheese and sour cream. Season it with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Stir everything together until it’s combined. Pour the mixture on top of the chicken layer and smooth it out so that it is flat and even.
PRO TIP: Be sure to shred the cheese yourself and avoid the pre shredded stuff that comes in a bag. It will melt much better that way.
NOTE: When adding salt, please keep in mind that the canned soups are salty to some people. If you're watching your salt, don't add any extra and/or use low sodium soup cans.

Then, in a small bowl, mix together the cheddar cheese, breadcrumbs, and olive oil. Sprinkle it evenly on top of the casserole. Place it into the center rack of the oven for 20 minutes or until the sides are hot and bubbly and the top is toasted. Let the casserole sit for about five minutes, garnish with parsley (optional) and enjoy!
PRO TIP: Be sure to let the casserole rest to firm and thicken up.

Can I Make This Ahead Of Time?
Yes, absolutely! Just assemble it up to 24 hours in advance, cover, and pop it into the refrigerator. Take it out about 20 minutes before placing it into the oven and enjoy!
What Can I Serve This With?
This casserole is best served with simple sides like, rice, egg noodles or a salad.
Can I Use Frozen Broccoli?
Yes you can. Just be sure to drain it really well after boiling to avoid a watery casserole.
Storage
Let the chicken cool completely and place it into an air tight storage container. It will last in the refrigerator for up to three days.
