Sausage Bread

From the recipe collection of Tara Ippolito

This sausage bread recipe is one that I keep coming back to when I need a super easy snack, appetizer or main course.

My mother used to make this for every family event when we were kids and it was always one of the first things to go.

She’d slice the bread into thinner pieces if it was being served as an appetizer and larger ones for a main course.

The flavors of the crumbled sausage, blended cheeses and dough go together so well making it almost irresistible.

Truth be told, there has never been a time that I’ve eaten only one slice. I’m at a 2 slice minimum for certain.

Using prepared pizza dough makes this recipe a breeze to put together, too.

If you’re close to a local pizza place, I’d highly recommend popping in to pick some up.

Just ask for a large pizza dough. They’re usually very happy to sell it and at an incredible price, too.

Our local shops charge only $2.00 for a large and $3 for an extra large. You can beat that deal!

This is a great recipe to throw together for company or any kind of get together. My boys especially like to eat this in front of the TV when the football game is on.

This is one of those recipes that can easily be served for important holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas but easy enough to make for causal evenings at home, too.

I hope you give this recipe a try. If you do, I know you’ll love it just as much as my family and friends do.

Fast. Simple. Delicious.

Sausage Bread Variations

I like this recipe made just the way it is but here are some ways to change it up if you’d like to.

  • Dough- I like to get a large pizza dough from a local Pizza Place but any homemade or refrigerated pizza dough will do.
  • Cheese- Cheese slices or shredded cheese can both be used in this recipe. Of using shredded cheese, use about ¾ cups of each.
  • Sausage - Your choice to use either sweet or hot sausage.

Sausage Bread Ingredients

  • Prepared Pizza Dough
  • Flour (for dusting)
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  • Provolone Cheese
  • Ground Sausage
  • Olive Oil
  • Minced Garlic
  • Salt, Pepper, and Italian Seasoning
  • Beaten Egg

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°

First, in a large skillet, heat the olive oil and brown the sausage while breaking it into small pieces. Once browned, add the minced garlic, season with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning and cook for an additional minute. Drain if necessary.

Next, add the pizza dough to a clean, lightly floured surface and roll it out with a rolling pin into a rectangular shape.

Then, place the slices of provolone cheese onto the dough. Leave about half an inch open on the edges.

Now, place the mozzarella cheese down on top of the provolone.

Next, sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly on top of the cheeses.

Then, jelly roll the dough up tucking the sides in as you go.

Now, carefully place the sausage bread, seam side down onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Next, brush the top of the bread with the beaten egg and sprinkle the top with 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning.

Then, place it into the oven for 25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the bread is cooked through.

Finally, let the sausage bread rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!
