TV Taco Dip is exactly the kind of easy snack I love making when everyone wants something delicious to munch on without a lot of work. It’s cool, creamy, cheesy, and loaded with classic taco flavors, but there’s no meat and absolutely no cooking required.
This is the dip you make when you want to plop down in front of the TV with a big bowl of tortilla chips and call it a night. Whether you’re watching football, having a movie marathon, catching up on your favorite show, or entertaining friends, this simple layered taco dip always hits the spot.
Why You'll Love It
- No cooking required: Everything comes together cold and can be assembled in just a few minutes.
- Perfect for snacking: Grab some tortilla chips and park yourself in front of the TV.
- Meatless: You get plenty of taco flavor without needing ground beef or chicken.
- Easy to customize: Add your favorite taco toppings to make it your own.
- Great for entertaining: This is an easy choice for game day, movie night, parties, and casual get-togethers.
Ingredients
Heres everything you'll need to make this delicious dip. You can find the full ingredients list along with measurements and instructions on the recipe card below.
- Cream cheese — Creates the thick, creamy base for the dip.
- Sour cream — Lightens up the cream cheese and makes the base smooth and scoopable.
- Taco seasoning — Gives the creamy layer all of that classic taco flavor.
- Cheddar cheese — I recommend hand shredding the cheese for the best flavor and texture.
- Shredded lettuce — Adds a fresh, crisp layer that balances the creamy base.
- Tomatoes — Adds freshness, color, and a little juicy bite to every scoop.
- Tortilla chips — For scooping up all those creamy, cheesy taco layers.
How To Make It
Heres how to make this great appetizer. You can find the full ingredients list along with instructions on the recipe card below.
- Add the softened cream cheese and sour cream to a large bowl. Using a handheld electric mixer, beat them together until smooth and well combined. Stir in the taco seasoning until evenly incorporated. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly into the bottom of a serving or baking dish.

- Sprinkle the hand shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the creamy taco layer. Top with shredded lettuce. Finish with chopped tomatoes. Serve immediately with tortilla chips or refrigerate until you’re ready to eat.

Pro Tips
- Make sure the cream cheese is softened before mixing. Cold cream cheese will be much harder to blend smoothly with the sour cream.
- Hand shred the cheddar whenever possible. Freshly shredded cheese has a softer texture and tastes much better in a cold dip like this.
- Pat the tomatoes dry if they’re especially juicy. Too much tomato liquid can make the top of the dip watery.
- If you’re preparing TV Taco Dip ahead of time, make the cream cheese layer and add the cheddar, then wait until closer to serving to add the lettuce and tomatoes. This keeps the vegetables fresh and crisp.
Variations
- For a little heat, add sliced jalapeños, diced green chiles, or a few dashes of hot sauce.
- Add sliced black olives or chopped green onions for another layer of classic taco flavor.
- Top it with diced avocado right before serving.
- Add salsa between the creamy taco layer and cheese. Just use a thicker salsa so the dip doesn’t become watery.
- You can also add black beans or corn if you want to make the dip a little heartier while keeping it meatless.
What To Serve With It
Tortilla chips are my favorite choice because they’re sturdy enough to scoop through all the layers.
You could also serve it with corn chips, pita chips, crackers, mini bell peppers, celery sticks, or sliced cucumbers.
For a game day spread, serve it alongside wings, sliders, nachos, mozzarella sticks, or other easy finger foods.
Storage & Reheating
Store leftover TV Taco Dip tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days.
Because of the fresh lettuce and tomatoes, the vegetables will begin to soften as the dip sits. It’s best enjoyed the day it’s assembled.
This dip does not need to be reheated. Serve it cold straight from the refrigerator.
I don’t recommend freezing TV Taco Dip. Cream cheese and sour cream can change texture after freezing and thawing, and the fresh lettuce and tomatoes will become watery.
